Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple is ranked at the top position in the list of Best places to visit in Palani.

Place Description

Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple is one of the Six Abodes of Murugan. It is situated in the city of Palani, previously known as Thiruaavinankudi, in Dindigul district. The temple is located 100 kilometres southeast of Coimbatore and northwest of Madurai, in the foothills of the Palani Hills, Tamil Nadu, India. Palani temple is famous for its association with Panchamritam, a sweet mixture made of five ingredients.

According to Hindu mythology, Sage Narada visited the celestial court of Shiva at Mount Kailash to present him a fruit called gnana-palam. Shiva decided to give the fruit to whichever of his two sons could encircle the world thrice. Murugan, accepting the challenge, embarked on his journey around the globe on his peacock mount. However, Ganesha, realizing that the world was nothing more than his parents Shiva and Shakti combined, circumambulated them and won the fruit. This made Murugan furious, and he decided to mature from his boyhood. He chose to become a hermit in Palani. The idol of Muruga in Palani was created and consecrated by sage Bogar, one of Hinduism’s eighteen great Siddhars, using a mixture of nine poisonous herbs known as Navapashanam.
