The Nagaland State Museum is a museum located in Bayavü Hill, Kohima, Nagaland, India. It is operated by the Department of Art and Culture, Nagaland. The museum collects, preserves and displays a comprehensive collection of artefacts including ancient sculptures, traditional dresses, inscriptions from all over Nagaland. The museum was first opened to the public on 25 November 1970.

The museum is one of the two museums operated by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Nagaland.

3. Sakhrie Park

Place Description

Sakhrie Park is an urban park located at Middle Tsiepfü Tsiepfhe Ward in Kohima, Nagaland in north-eastern India. The park was opened to the public on 7 April 2016.

The area was previously a garbage dump and sinking area due to which it was prone to landslides. The project was undertaken by a private firm VAST Group which transformed the wasteland into an urban park. The park is equipped with numerous facilities such as a café, a candy store, a children’s park, a conference room, a multipurpose hall, and a parking lot.

The Cathedral of Kohima serves as the main church of the diocese of Kohima in Nagaland, India. It is known for its unique architecture, which incorporates elements of traditional Naga houses. One of the highlights of the cathedral is a 16 feet high carved wood crucifix, which is one of the largest crosses in Asia. The cathedral complex also houses the tomb of Bishop Alangimattathil, the first bishop of Kohima.

The construction of the cathedral began in 1986 and it was consecrated in January 1991. The majority of the three-crore expense for its construction was funded by Japanese individuals who wanted to create a memorial for the Japanese soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Kohima during World War II. As a tribute, the following quote is engraved in the surroundings of the cathedral: “…It is with thankfulness that we heard that a Catholic Cathedral was built at Kohima, where Mass would be offered every morning in the memory of the fallen…”

11. Kohima War Cemetery

Place Description

Kohima War Cemetery is a memorial dedicated to soldiers of the 2nd British Division of the Allied Forces who died in the Second World War at Kohima, the capital of the Indian state of Nagaland in April 1944. The soldiers died on the battleground of Garrison Hill in the tennis court area of the Deputy Commissioner’s residence.

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which maintains this cemetery among many others in the world, there are 1,420 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War at this cemetery, and a memorial to an additional 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were cremated in accordance with their faith.

The memorial was inaugurated by Field Marshal Sir William Slim, then Commander of the 14th Army in Burma.
