• It’s just 5 minutes away from bhushi dam and it’s absolutely breathtaking during the rainy season
• The cool climate and the nearby waterfalls are incredibly beautiful. I enjoyed it immensely.

11. Bhaja Buddhist Caves

Place Description

Bhaja Caves are a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC located off the Mumbai – Pune expressway near the city of Pune, India. The caves are 400 feet above the village of Bhaja, on an important ancient trade route running from the Arabian Sea eastward into the Deccan Plateau. The inscriptions and the cave temple are protected as a Monument of National Importance, by the Archaeological Survey of India per Notification No. 2407-A. It belongs to the Vedic Satavahana Dynasty Early Vedic schools in Maharashtra. The caves have a number of stupas, one of their significant features. The most prominent excavation is its chaitya, a good example of the early development of this form from wooden architecture, with a vaulted horseshoe ceiling. Its vihara has a pillared verandah in front and is adorned with unique reliefs. These caves are notable for their indications of the awareness of wooden architecture. The carvings prove that tabla – a percussion instrument – was used in India for at least 2300 years, disproving the centuries-held belief that the tabla was introduced to India by outsiders or from Turko-Arab.

13. Koraigad Fort (Korigad)

Korigad is a hill fort located about 20 km south of Lonavla in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. It is about 923 m above sea level. The planned township of Aamby Valley is built over the fort’s southern and eastern foothills. The closest village is Peth Shahpur, about 1 km north of the fort.

21. Kataldhaar

Place Description

Kataldhar is a waterfall near Lonavala in Pune district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This waterfall is not so famous because reaching the valley is somewhat difficult and requires basic trekking experience. Water is not available there for the whole year, but a good amount of water falls during the monsoon season.

Kataldhar Waterfall is located near Rajmachi Fort. To get there, find 3 mango trees on the Rajmachi Trekking route, at which point you can descend the Ulhas valley through dense forest. After reaching Kataldhar Waterfall you will see one eye shaped cave that could easily accommodate 100 people. At this cave, you will see Rajmachi Fort.

The height of Kataldhar Lonavla is about 350 feet with an overhand of more than 100 feet.

23. Kondhane Buddhist Caves

Place Description

The Kondana Caves are situated in the charming village of Kondana, just 33 km north of Lonavala and 16 km northwest of Karla Caves. This group of caves consists of 16 Buddhist caves that were excavated in the first century B.C. The remarkable construction on a wooden pattern is worth noting. To reach the caves, one can descend from Rajmachi village. There is only one inscription on the front of the Chaitya, which provides information about the donors.

34. Shrivardhan Fort

Place Description

Shrivardhan Fort is a hill fort located in Rajmachi village, which is 8.5 km from Lonavala in the Sahyadris mountain range. It is one of the two forts that make up the Rajmachi fortification, the other being Manaranjan Fort. Standing at a height of 900 m above sea level, it is the taller of the two peaks and was named after Shrivardhan Ganpatrao Patwardhan. Apart from a rampart, there are no visible constructions on the fort. It is believed to have served as a watchtower for the Sahyadri region. The fort has two water tanks at the top, one of which contains an iron pillar.
