1. Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

Place Description

The Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, formerly known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Reserved Forest, is an isolated protected area of evergreen forest located in Assam, India. The sanctuary was officially constituted and renamed in 1997. Set aside initially in 1881, its forests used to extend to the foothills of the Patkai mountain range.

Since then, the forest has been fragmented and surrounded by tea gardens and small villages. In the early 1900s, artificial regeneration was used to develop a well-stocked forest, resulting in the site’s rich biodiversity. The Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary contains India’s only gibbons – the hoolock gibbons, and Northeastern India’s only nocturnal primate – the Bengal slow loris.

The upper canopy of the forest is dominated by the hollong tree, while the nahar dominates the middle canopy. The lower canopy consists of evergreen shrubs and herbs. The habitat is threatened by illegal logging, encroachment of human settlements, and habitat fragmentation.

2. Jorhat Gymkhana Club (Places to visit, Things to do in Jorhat)

Jorhat Gymkhana Club is a sports venue located in Jorhat, Assam. The club was built in 1876 by D. Slimmons and has been hosting various sports events ever since. It offers facilities for horse races, lawn tennis on grass courts, swimming, billiards, polo, golf, and cricket. The club is known for its prestigious Governor’s Cup, which is played on a lush green 9-hole golf course.

The Jorhat Gymkhana Club is the third oldest golf club in India, following the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and the Thiruvananthapuram Golf Club. In addition to golf, the club also provides facilities for lawn tennis on grass courts, swimming, billiards, polo, a gentleman’s bar, and a cinema theatre. The cricket ground at the club, known as Jorhat Gymkhana Ground, has a capacity of 8,000 and features a turf wicket. It has hosted matches of the CK Nayudu Trophy, an Under-23 Indian domestic cricket tournament, as well as the Senior Women’s National Cricket Championship. The ground is also used by the Khelmati sports club for practicing cricket. The Club Road, which connects the city center with the Jorhat Gymkhana Club, was the first asphalt road laid in the area.

10. Molai Forest Reserve

11. Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar

Place Description

Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar is a naamghar located in Jorhat district, Assam, India. It was established by the saint-reformer Madhavdeva. In 1528, Madhavdeva lit an earthen lamp at this place, which has been continuously burning ever since. The lamp is refueled with mustard oil by the priests of the naamghar. Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar is situated in Dhekiakhowa village, 15 km east of Jorhat city and 3.5 km away from National Highway 37. It is known as a Bornaamghar due to its historical significance and large campus.

The naamghar is part of a complex that covers 13 bighas of land. It is maintained by a managing committee, which relies on donations from devotees. In addition to the upkeep of the complex, the committee also organizes various social and cultural programs.

There is an interesting anecdote behind the name of Dhekiakhowa Naamghar. Guru Madhavdeva, while on his mission to reform people and spread the Ekasarana Naam Dharma, stayed in this small village. He spent the night at the hut of an old woman, who served him rice with Dhekia Saak, a common wild vegetable.
